I’ll Never Be Good Enough…

Fedorenko Competition Kettlebells

I’ve realized this morning that I’m never going to be good enough. At least, not as long as I’m playing by the rules of society and our fucked up culture.

I really shouldn’t care. But I do. It’s not even that I play by the rules anymore, but a lot of people I know still do. I’m VERY clear about my goals and who I want to be and what I want my life to look like. VERY CLEAR. The “problem” is that what I want isn’t what most people want.

Maybe what most people think they want isn’t truly what they want and it’s what our TV and internet culture told them they should want. Probably that. But I’ve met VERY FEW people who have thought through every aspect of their lives and made decisions based on their own internal desires and standards.

How many books have YOU written?

I love how everyone tells me how much I need to relax and have fun and “let loose.” That’s all nice – and I KNOW I could do a little better in the “relaxing department.” (Particularly since, ONE DAY into my “no computer in the morning and yoga first thing in the morning” habit I’m writing this instead of doing yoga…) But I know what I want and where I want to be and who I want to be – and you don’t get there by relaxing. I also know that when the muse appears I need to write. She will likely be gone if I wait until later… Welcome to the wonderful world of being a wacky creative…

I talked about what it was like to drive my book “The Paleo Dieter’s Missing Link” to completion last week in the post: “My SINS Challenge Update – Late is a Lot Better than Never.” IT WAS HARD. So was getting a Chemistry degree 10 years ago. So is making good progress in weight training and martial arts – I know these two are hard because I’m currently making SHIT for progress. Nothing worth accomplishing is easy! NOTHING!

But, it’s a lot easier to find creative ways to distract yourself from what you really want or tell yourself you’re happy with the way things are. And, unless you are surrounded by exceptional people, most everyone in your life will be thrilled to tell you you’re much better served drinking with them or eating garbage with them than you are working on what matters TO YOU. Misery loves company…

There was a great quote in the book I just started reading, “The War of Art.” In it, Pressfield says:

“When we drug ourselves to blot out our soul’s call, we are being good Americans and exemplary consumers. We’re doing exactly what TV commercials and pop materialist culture have been brainwashing us to do since birth. Instead of applying self-knowledge, self-discipline, delayed gratification and hard work, we simply consume a product.”

I wasted some of the best training years of my life in my early 20s trying to “have it all.” I was out “being social” instead of studying or resting for my workout the next morning. I was letting others decided what was best for me instead of doing what I KNEW was right in spite of the fact that no one else was doing it and in spite of the fact that all my friends encouraged me to “let loose” and not be so “intense” all the time. And what was the final outcome of that period of my life? A train wreck. If I had it to live over again I wouldn’t even answer my phone when people called me to hang out. I’d train and rest and study and let the world go fuck itself. Maybe a few more pounds of muscle or a bigger deadlift or better health isn’t what our culture values. But, it’s what I valued then and it’s what I value now – and THAT’S what’s important.

But I can only live in The Now…

I can’t go back there, though. I can only live today and apply the lessons of yesterday to what I do now.

And here’s what I know today:

  • I want to be a better writer and blogger
  • I want to write the best fitness blog IN THE WORLD (Yeah, the world…)
  • I want outstanding health, strength and fitness
  • I want many, MANY people to buy, read and LOVE my new book

That’s just a start. I wrote out a bunch of other goals here: “My OWN SINS Challenge Goals.” None of these things happen by being balanced, they don’t happen by relaxing and they don’t happen by accident. They happen when you put in the hard, HARD work and break through your own – and society’s – resistance.

I’m done with it all. Nothing I want or do or accomplish will ever be good enough for anyone else anyway. I’m going to continue to focus on ME and what makes ME happy and what I value. If people like me and admire me for it, great. If it’s not good enough for someone else, I don’t care.

YOU shouldn’t care about anything but YOUR OWN standards either – as long as they’re TRULY YOURS. Think about THAT for a while…

My SINS Challenge Update – Late is a Lot Better than Never

The Paleo Dieter's Missing Link

This is actually my FIRST update for the SINS challenge. Where have I been? I’ve been hard at work on goal number one from my original post – Finishing my Paleo Diet book.

My original goal was to finish the book and launch it on the second Sunday of March 2011. I missed that deadline, but the book DID launch on April 1, 2011! If you didn’t know it was out, that’s OK – I haven’t made a big deal out of it… Yet…

But, yes, the book is DONE and yes, it ROCKS! It’s called “The Paleo Dieter’s Missing Link.” You can click on the image if you want to know more about it…

It Usually Takes Longer and is Harder Than You Thought

Most of you who know me know that I love to write. Well, let me tell ya… Writing blog posts is a lot of fun for me. Writing stuff in the 10-20 page range is enjoyable, slightly challenging and satisfying. Writing a book that’s over 160 pages is HARD. The longest technical papers I ever wrote in college were in the 20-30 page range. I’ve never done anything of the magnitude of this book. I definitely got up close and personal with some of my demons during this project.

This project could have gone on forever too. The closer I got to “done” the more work I seemed to have. The fact that I wanted it to be PERFECT had a lot to do with it. And perfection is hard when a proofread takes 2-3 days… BTW, if you have a hardcover book nearby, take a look at the first few pages. Likely there’s a STAFF of people who worked on it. A STAFF. This thing was just me. The cats were surprisingly uninterested and unhelpful with the editing…

The point is, writing a book was A LOT harder than I thought and it took LONGER than I thought. But I did it. There were many, many times I wanted to quit and find an easier way. There were a bunch of times I decided to take a break for a few days and found myself waking up the next morning stressed and obsessed with finishing – even though my mind wasn’t really recovered and fluid. I had to write very often when I didn’t want to. And I had to stay off of Facebook and Twitter, not post a lot on my blog and stay off of the SINS page on Facebook. Not fun, but sometimes you have to drop the hammer and make stuff happen.

The PROCESS wasn’t fun and wasn’t pretty, but the book is DONE – and DONE WELL. And it’s only a few weeks late (even though the ORIGINAL deadline was Jan 1, 2011…).

The Girls of MidCoast CrossFit

Pushing Through “The Dip”

Most of you know I’m a HUGE Seth Godin fan. One of the things that really got me through this project was his little book “The Dip.” I actually reread that book right around my lowest point in the project. It was VERY CLEAR to me that I was in The Dip and needed to push though it. As Seth says: “Starting is easy, finishing is hard.” I thought about that a lot. I also thought about how it seemed to get HARDER the closer I got to the end.

Here’s how Seth Godin describes The Dip:

“Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point-really hard, and not much fun at all.”

But this made a HUGE impact on me. If my business and marketing hero can admit that projects get hard and less fun as they go on, how could I NOT push through The Dip and finish this thing?

BTW, there are little Dips too – Like the middle of a WOD. Right around the 3rd round of 5 when you want to stop. Or around rep 12 of a set of 20 Rep Squats. Starting is easy. Finishing is hard… The Dips are EVERYWHERE once you know to look for them.

Something else I thought of – A LOT – is how many people I know who have said they “should write a book” or  they “are writing a book.” Think about it. How many people have STARTED a book versus how many have FINISHED one? To that, let’s ask how many have actually FINISHED a GOOD one…

Starting is easy, finishing is hard.

There’s a REASON this is a running joke on Family Guy and there’s a reason it’s FUNNY:

Starting is Easy, Finishing is Hard

For me, it was really helpful to remember that finishing is SUPPOSED TO BE HARD. That’s what separates the winners from the losers. A lot of people start things. A lot fewer finish…

Finishing on time is nice. Finishing perfectly is nice too. Finishing on time AND perfectly is pretty special. But most of us – and many very successful people are included in this – finish well and reasonably on time. And, as far as I can tell, doing things well and reasonably on time – again and again and again – has something to do with being successful.

But you have to START and you have to STRIVE for great results

I had this argument with someone I was close to for a long time. I start anything I do with the intention of doing it at a very high level. I strive for perfection. I know I won’t achieve it, but I strive for it anyway. I did this in college. I studied for my exams and wrote all my lab reports and papers with the intention of getting 100. I almost never got it, but striving for it kept me turning out outstanding work. If, like the person I was close to, I was constantly starting things thinking “I’ll be OK with a C,” I’d never have done anything outstanding.

I’ve only finished two classes with Cs in my life – Biochemistry and Multi-Variable Calculus. Other than those classes, I was an A and B student. What do you think would have happened in those classes if I had gone INTO them thinking “I’ll be OK with just scraping by with a C?” I went in expecting an A and wanting an A. I didn’t get it, but I got out intact and was able to go on to the next year without repeating the class. And, what saved me in biochem was that the LAB portion of the class was worth 25%. I got an A in that part. I just got murdered in the lecture because I wasn’t a biochem major and was in an entirely different department in a class with people who had already been doing that stuff for a while. The A in the lab evened out the mess I was in with the lecture portion of the class. Perfection, no. But I finished a tough one and put it behind me.

Start Something, Finish Something or Do Something Well – TODAY

That’s about it for now. I have A LOT of blogging to catch up on, but it’s BEAUTIFUL out and I’m going to go for a run.I also have a fun day planned with a new friend and you just might, MIGHT be hearing that another one of my SINS Challenge goals happened soon… ;-)

If you’re starting something today, start with the intention of being outstanding. If you’re finishing something today, push through and really finish it. And, if you’re doing something today, do it as well as you possibly can. You won’t always get an A, but there are a lot of people who never even start and plenty MORE who don’t finish.

It’s Always Right There…

Picture of my gym boss timer in my home gym.

I laid out my goals for the SINS Challenge a week or so ago. I’m working hard on them – although I’m still on THE FIRST ONE! My book WILL be out in the next few weeks. In fact, I have the structure and organization finished – FINALLY. I’m really just in the final editing stage now…

I did so much writing in college and in my science and business career that I really didn’t think writing a book was such a big deal. Well, IT IS! The fact that I want to do something REALLY special and outstanding is also making it take longer than I wanted. BUT it’s almost there! And when it’s done, that will free up a lot of time for blogging and training and focusing on my diet and rest. So, I’m more or less on track with my SINS Challenge goals. More or less :-)

I had kind of a wacky day a few days ago…

I’ve had some hard days. Whenever I do high-focus creative stuff – like writing a 100+ page book – I get kind of wacky. My stress level goes up, I can’t focus on anything else and the project is always on my mind. I’m not a “balance” person. I’m an obsessive, manic, hyper-focusing creative type. All I can do is FINISH things so I can get back to feeling normal. If I’m working on something I think is important I get kind of nutty until it’s done…

I’ve been FORCING myself to put the writing aside to train the last week or so. The ONLY thing keeping me on track is knowing that I have other goals that won’t happen overnight and waiting to get moving on them until the book is finished is going to put me too far behind.

So, I dragged my ass out into the garage…

The “voice in the head” was particularly angry today. I was having a hard time focusing and my thoughts kept drifting back to my book and a million other things that are stressing me out. I pushed myself though. I know the weather will be nice in a few weeks and I can either be healthier, more fit and closer to my goals or I can be further away from them.

I dropped my water bottle into one of the Gladiator Bins I recently installed and that felt good. I didn’t really notice it though – like, it didn’t register. I practiced some handstands – which I COMPLETELY suck at – and then worked on jumping rope for 6 – 1 minute sets with a minute break between each. And I also SUCK at jumping rope.

When I got to kettlebell swings I set the Gymboss timer and clipped it to the other wire bin – at the perfect height and the perfect angle – without even thinking about it. Everything fell into place for about a second – the “should’s” and “have to’s” stopped. The angry voice in my head that tells me what an out of shape loser I am stopped. And – for just a second – I was thankful to have a nice place to train that has more than I could ever need.

This morning I was pissed because I want a Log Bar. And because I “should” have already made some Atlas stones – I’ve only had the mold from Slater’s sitting in the box it came in for a year. And the dishes “should” be done and my truck needs to be washed and waxed and my book was supposed to be done last week and I need to do yoga and stretch my shoulders out thoroughly because tomorrow I’m doing 20 Rep Squats and LAST week I had to stop at rep 17 because my shoulder really hurt.

My Home Gym

But it’s always right there…

But I can always only be where I am. I want things to be “better” but they’re not. They’re the way they are. I can be mad about it or I can practice jumping rope – even though I completely SUCK at it and keep tripping on the rope every few jumps. Yup, it’s “wrong” and I “should” be better at it but I’m not. I can STAY bad at it or I can keep doing it – and sucking at it – until I don’t suck anymore.

It’s just what it is. This blog post sucks because I’m not focused enough while I’m writing it and my book sucks because it’s not done yet and this chair I’m sitting in sucks because I can’t afford the one I want (it’s like $1200) and whatever else sucks… IN FACT, even though I’m half joking here, I’m realizing right now that I could spend THE REST OF THE DAY listing everything that sucks in my life and all the stuff I want to be better at and “should” be better at. Wow. How’s THAT for a revelation? Focus on the negative much?

But I’m where I am and for that split-second I was feeling OK with where I was – SUCKING AND WORKING LIKE HELL TO GET BETTER. If you can just shut the voice in your head up long enough to see it, you can accept that you are where you are and want to be better – AND WORK ON GETTING BETTER. Or you can drive yourself completely NUTS about how you “should” be there now. That sounds REALLY silly now that I write it. If it was REALLY supposed to be different it would be. When you’ve MADE it different it will be. In the meantime, thinking it “should” be different is just a waste of energy that could be invested into getting you to stop sucking sooner.

That’s about it, I have some stuff to go suck at now…

    My OWN Body Transformation…

It’s funny that we somehow miss the forest for the trees. It’s also funny how we’ve managed to split true HEALTH off from our pursuits be they CrossFit, Bodybuilding, Paleo dieting, Powerlifting or whatever. When I sat down to really nail down some goals for myself I kept coming back to performance numbers or appearance goals. Those are good, but I think they don’t necessarily correlate to good health in all cases. They can, but I don’t think it’s a given that they always will. The issue then becomes: How do you quantify “good health” and what the hell do you even call the pursuit of it?

    Defining a New “Bodybuilding”

I picked up a copy of Ironman Magazine a while back. It’s bad but not as bad as some of the trainwrecks out there – it’s still bad beyond belief, though. But it was an Arnold edition, so I at least got to see pics of someone who always inspires me.

    Ironman Arnold Cover

I was actually excited to see an article about fasting since I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for a long time now. It was basically a negative article with health warnings and a “further studies are needed” attitude. God forbid someone went 30 minutes without drinking a whey protein and dextrose shake. Alas, Ironman…

Once Upon a Time, This Was a HEALTH Subculture…

I mention Randy Roach’s book Muscle, Smoke and Mirrors all the time. I even reviewed Muscle, Smoke and Mirrors here. When you look at bodybuilding or “Physical Culture” from the 30s, 40s and 50s, it’s not unlike a lot of what we’re doing today in the CrossFit, Paleo and Kettlebell communities. It was a low-tech, hard work oriented approach and the men (and women) training at the time were fantastically strong. Bodybuilding as we know it was barely coming into it’s own, and “weightlifting” was where it was at. Obviously, lifts like Squat, Clean and Jerk and Snatch were big. These guys were totally counter-culture with their raw milk and raw egg protein shakes and “obsessive” health practices like sleeping a lot, avoiding stress and training all the time. In THOSE days it was typical for these guys to seek out local farmers and have a standing order for gallons of raw milk and dozens of eggs every week. They were also well acquainted with their local butcher and guys like Armand Tanny made a regular practice of eating raw meat and raw liver.

    Here’s John Grimek in 1936:

And here’s Joe Zimmerman – who trained with the ORIGINAL York Barbell guys back in the early days:

And here’s York Barbell Club, Once Upon A Time

And here’s Arnold’s inspiration, role model and mentor, Reg Park:

    Reg Park

I’m not sure when the above pic of Reg was taken, but he’s likely drug free here. If he’s not, he was taking barely anything by today’s standards.

    Here’s Armand Tanny around 1949-50

    Armand Tanny

And, since this IS part of my blog for the SINS Challenge, here are a few of the women of Muscle Beach in Venice, CA:

    Stepping Back to Move Forward

The point is, these were health nuts who happened to be seriously strong and well conditioned – not to mention into gymnastics. Sound like CrossFit at all? I’m taking my shit back to a MUCH simpler time diet, training and lifestyle-wise. Everyone thought I was crazy for dumping my big house with the bigger mortgage and moving to my family’s little beach cottage here to train and write and blog full-time. Yeah, stupid like a fox (It’s a Simpsons quote :-) )

My Own “Golden Age of Bodybuilding”

I’ve had some really good training days. And I had them here in THIS house. My goal is to have them back and do them EVEN BETTER! This is me about 11 years ago:

    Looking Toward the Future

As I write this I’m 38 years old. In fact, shit, I’m going to be 39 in July. That’s a dose of reality, huh? Robb Wolf coached me over the phone for a few months last year and he said something that stuck with me. I’ve been dealing with the typical fatigue, poor digestion and myriad other problems created by too much stress and general burnout. Robb – who’s about the same age – said: “This isn’t the stage we want to have set as we move into our 40′s.” That really nailed me. If your health isn’t great NOW what’s it going to be in a few years? The clock is ticking…

Here’s Mark Sisson of Mark’s Daily Apple at about 55 years old:

    Mark Sisson

And here’s Jack Lalanne at 40:

    Jack Lalanne Magazine Cover

Obviously, it’s completely possible to have great health and strength – not to mention look good with your shirt off – into your 40′s and 50′s. IF YOU GET OFF YOUR ASS!

So, this is me getting off my ass…

Here Are MY SINS Challenge Goals

    • My Paleo book is released the second Sunday in March of 2011
    • On or before May 1, 2011 I want to Back Squat 225lbs for 20 reps without racking the bar and Dip body weight PLUS 80lbs for 6 reps.
    • Before August 1, 2011 I want my Handstand Push Ups to be as second nature as regular push ups are now.
    • By June 1, 2011 I want to be sleeping soundly through the night and getting a consistent 9-11 hours of sleep EVERY night – Yeah, you read that right. To those who have given me shit about this in the past – and our messed up and deluded society in general – THIS IS HEALTHY people. Just because you and everyone else  lives on caffeine and sleeps 4 hours a night doesn’t mean it’s even REMOTELY healthy. And, besides, I did the same thing for a LONG time and am living with the end result now. I’ll NEVER do it again. I actually ranted about this in my post “Fitness, Healthy, Money and LIES.”
    • Starting this spring and on into summer, fall and forever, my diet will be composed of the absolute maximum of local, organic, direct from the farm foods. By the end of the summer I’ll have reliable local sources for eggs, beef, pork, chickens, raw cow and goat milk, organic fruits and vegetables and maybe even some whole grain bread and cheese once in a while.
    • Before the end of March 2011 I’ll be consistently training 1-2 days a week at MidCoast CrossFit in Old Saybrook.
    • Training 1-2 times a week at a good local yoga studio.
    • Training 1-2 times a week in MMA and BJJ again with my friends at Modern Self-Defense Center.
    • Within the next year have an exceptional – and non-psychotic – woman in my life. Bonus points if she already CrossFits and eats Paleo :-)
    • 10lbs of fat lost
    • 10lbs of muscle gained
    • Digestion is completely on track
    • Within the next year, Practical Paleolithic is THE BEST training, nutrition and motivation blog on the internet. That’s the best in the WORLD, folks…
    • Strong is the New Skinny on Facebook is THE BEST training and motivation page on Facebook. Oh, wait, it already IS ;-)

That about covers it! There’s probably more, but I’ll leave it there for now… It’s all there for EVERYONE to see and for me to read over and over…

    SINS Body Transformation Blog Challenge…

    CrossFit women running

OK, everyone! It’s early Sunday morning and some cool stuff is already happening on the SINS Facebook Page! Today we hammered out the start of something that has the potential to be seriously awesome. We’ve put together the SINS Body Transformation Blog Challenge (and, no, we didn’t spend a lot of time working on the name ;-) ). The point was, to do an “Open Source” body transformation challenge that’s fun and motivating and creates support for everyone involved with SINS. Also, Wild Gorillaman and Team Gorilla have stepped up and gotten involved – so we’ll be seeing a lot of the participants in the Team Gorilla updates that we all know and love.

The “Rules” are Simple and HIGHLY Open to YOUR Interpretation and Implementation:

    • Have a blog or start one – blogger.com or wordpress.com are two places that will give you a free blog if you don’t have one
    • Write an initial blog post saying you’re going to make the best progress of your life, when you’re starting, goals, before pics (if you want) training and anything else you want
    • Post that blog to the SINS Facebook Page as a NEW status update
    • Blog at any frequency you like to stay motivated – daily, weekly, bi-weekly, etc. and post those to the SINS Facebook page as a NEW status update
    • Create a final blog post with before and after pics, commentary, measurements and anything else you like and post THAT to SINS on Facebook as a NEW status

    That’s pretty much it!

    • It’s open to women AND men
    • You can train any way you like – regular gym, CrossFit, powerlifting, kettlebells, endurance athlete
    • Eat any way you want – Paleo, Zone, high carb, vegetarian
    • You have to take $2000 a month worth of SINS and Team Gorilla Brand supplements - that’s a JOKE! We don’t make supplements :-P

It’s All About Community and “Open Source”

Our hope is that the SINS community – that’s YOU – will take this and run with it and adapt it to their needs. If you’re starting a Paleo Challenge at your box, just blog it and use that. If you’re training for an event, use that. Use whatever YOU want. This is about creating support and getting everyone motivated and involved! Do what works FOR YOU. There’s no real time-frame here, but I’m thinking in the 6 month range for MYSELF. Others are doing 30 days, 6 weeks, etc. Use this as an opportunity to stay motivated and on track with what YOU’RE doing. If you need some encouragement, here are some body transformations to get you motivated!

The point is to put some positive pressure on yourself, interact with the community and get some support and encouragement. Summer is getting CLOSER! Let’s be in the best shape of our lives for this one! If you need help with goals this will help. Other than that – LET’S GET TO IT!
